A Survey of Epilepsy


Abstract
143 epileptic patients were random sampled and surveyed have been treated at Rose Club in Wonju Christian Hospital.
A series of question framed to detect general characteristics, the present condition of medication, delivery system, psychosocial adjustment and behavior change after membership of Rose Club Were asked by the method of questionnaire.
The result were summarized as follows:
1. Males were 1. 5 times more than female, 40.6% was 20 generation. Epileptic patients has many difficulties to continue schooling and sustain marital life, 21.0% had quitted schooling, 11.9% had divorced.
2. The age of onset of epileptic seizure 74.2% was before 20 years old, 75.5% has Grand Mal seizure. 44.8% was controlled for one year, but 55.2% remain suffering attacks during medication.
3. 37.8% took more than 5 years informing about Wonju Rose Club after onset of epilepsy. 42.2% was introduced by neighbor, member of Wonju Rose Club and family or relatives.
4. 12.6% perspected about public opinion about epilepsy was not changed since past days, considering as lack of understanding, but 53.9% perspected that has changed positively. 42.7% has self assurance after medication, but 44.5% has psychological problems, 26.8 feels anxiety of explosure of their illness to the others. Many patients tried to hide epilepsy to others, 37.8% hide to neighborhood, 9.1% hide even part or all of their family.
5. Rose Club activity evaluated 76.5% has affirmative or positive change after membership of Rose Club, contributing psycho-social treatment of epilepsy. 91.6% answered they were aided by the Rose Club project.
